Resolution Issue- getting weirder

I'm hoping one of you PS geniuses can help me. With all the web work I do, I have always thought that something that was 72dpi would be low res and suitable for veiwing on the web; anything that was 300 dpi would be good for printing.

Its come to my attention that with my new camera its set to 10mpx which is 3680x2760. I've printed a few and they look great in 4x6;
when I open them in photoshop they do indeed say 3680x2760 BUT they say 72 dpi. Why would it say that when its clearly not low res?

Thanks as always.

All cameras take at 72dpi. They should be fine if you were to print them at 8X10 still.

It's because the physical size of the image at 72ppi is enormous. Size it down to 4X6 (without resampling) and it will have a higher ppi. My camera produces images at 180 but the size is around 12 inches physically.

Hi.. as SR points out in the article - the camera dpi is not relevant.. the only thing that is important is the resolution of the camera in megapixels (up to a point of course)..

Also, if you uncheck the "Resample Image" checkbox in the Resize Image dialog, you can tell PS to treat the image as a different size. Anytime you resample an image you are either throwing away image information (if making it smaller) or interpolating new information (if making it larger). Either way, the image quality degrades. Keep in mind that this will scale the image proportionally. If you need to change the aspect ratio, you should do that with the crop tool first.

Good Luck..
