When using your text tool by any chance? That is what crashes mine - the only constant is its when Im using the text tool.
Usually enexpected shutdowns are a memory issue - you may have been working in PS a while or even just working with your computer for a while. A reboot usually helps

Get into the habit of saving before you choose the text tool - trust me - its worth it

Thankfully, I did I know I need more RAM on this computer. It's old and not very good, with misc. parts to *try* to make it better, lol. I'll have to tell dh about this problem so he can get me some more RAM (or, that laptop I've been wanting )

How many fonts do you have loaded in your system for photoshop? If you have tons... removing most of them and only installing those you need as you need them may solve your problem... all fonts, plugins, etc that are installed when loading Photoshop take up memory (and slow down the startup of the program).. if you don't have a lot of memory, this may resolve the problem.

Well, I have a lot of fonts, but I've installed them in The Font Thing, not in my windows font folder. Does that make a difference?

Oh, and i should have said that the problem is really only seen when I'm working with text templates. While working with fonts, I'm fine. But when I try to use a text template, or work with text on a path to get circular text (for example), that's when it shuts down.
