PS & Fonts

Hi,
Does Photoshop use the regular Windows fonts, or does it have it's own font folder? I searched the PS folders but can't find any font folders.
There are over 400 fonts in my Windows font folder, and I find that many are the same font with just a different name.
I downloaded The Font Thing and am trying to organize and get rid of a lot of fonts but I haven't figured out how to get the ones I have organized in The Font Thing to open up in PS.

Anybody else use The Font Thing?

EZ

Hi Ez - this tut here should work for you http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/a-tut...icle_504.shtml
Basically you open the font and minimise it and it will become available in your font list.
Make usre you also read this to know what fonts you should not delete - deleting them may cause system problems

PS I have over 2000 fonts installed in my fonts folder LOL

Top of the morning to you Shelleyrae.
It's Friday morning and we finally have some sunshine here in Iowa.
Thanks for your help with the font question. I do know about keeping a folder on my
desktop of my fonts and just open one up to use it, however I didn't know about deleting fonts from my windows folder, and I almost was going to delete the ones I didn't want.
You saved my butt on that one.

Like you, I have about 1000 fonts that open up in PS. I just wanted a way to categorize them so I didn't have to scroll through them to find what I wanted. I could just divide them up into different sub-folders on my desktop but I downloaded the free program "The font Thing", and it
does the same thing a lot easier. I figured out how to use the program last night, and spent most of the evening categorizing the ones I think I will use. I have categories like Script, Traditional, Bold, Fat, Funny, Unusual, Holiday, etc.
Also, in PSCS3 you can type text, then highlight it and use your scroll wheel to scroll down the font list, and your type will change to each font you scroll through. This can take some time if you have hundreds of fonts. With using The Font Thing, it's a lot quicker to choose a font.

Thanks again,
EZ

also keep in mind a neat trick in PSCS2/CS3.. if you have some text highlighted and want to scroll through it.. just hit Ctrl-H and the highlight will disappear (letting you see the text better) but it is really still highlighted... makes picking a font a lot easier.

Having over 400 fonts active in your system really eats up memory when adobe loads because it load each one you have active.. also makes loading PS very slow. I typically only have about 100 fonts active in my system and use a font manager (like the font thing) to activate the fonts I need for a particular project. Once I'm done with the project, I inactivate the fonts again. Keeps my memory usage low, let PS open in about 10 seconds and makes looking for fonts in the list much easier and quicker.. if you are already using the font manager, you might want to remove them from Windows/Fonts and then just activate as needed.

Pesto126,
Thanks, PSCS3 is such an amazing program, I find that I learn two or three new things about it every day. Almost every day I look for and watch tutorials on PS. It definitely is not an easy program to learn, but if you keep at it every day, you slowly understand how to work with it.
My little Acer 12" notebook loads PS in under 10 seconds. Last week I upgraded my ram from 2 gigs to 4 gigs. Newegg.com has really great prices on ram.
I'm working on a layout thats 266mgs and will print out at 24" x 36" at 300dpi. So far PS has handled this huge file without a hiccup.

I keep a notebook and log things that I learn in PS. I find that if I don't use the program every day, I have to refer back to my log to refresh myself on how to do things.

See I am lousy with font managers I need everything to be right there to work best so I sacrifice the speed opening PS for it.

You might want to take a look at this tutorial I posted earlier in the week too http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/a-tut...icle_735.shtml

Hey SR.. those are some great tips.. I didn't realize you could change the preview size!

Just an addition, in CS3, if you are in the Text layer and actively typing text, you can also move the text by just moving your cursor just outside the text box.. the cursor will turn to the move tool and you'll be able move it wherever you'd like while still remaining in edit mode.
