erasing to make an arc

Hi. I have photoshop cs2
I have one layer that is a square and its filled in with color
behind it I have a striped background layer
on top of the square I have a text box that is an arc
I want to erase some of the square below the arc but I need to know how to do it in the arc shape. My hand is not steady enough to do it freehand, I don't think
Thanks.

how about using the circle or oval marquee tool to select the area you want to erase, then hit delete?

or check in the Custom shapes for an arc shape that you could mainpulate to fit under your text- then you could use that as a template to delete the area.

I have done this in the past: add another layer just underneath the text, and brush, using a feather edged brush at a reduced opacity underneath the text so it gets highlighted. You could also try the "outer glow" layer style and fiddle with it so your text is highlighted. This was you don't have to erase! Just another idea to play with....
