Talking adding borders or mat to photo edge

Ya'll are going to probably be seeing a lot of questions from me in the photoshop forum!

I want to put a border around a photo. I was playing around with this and it wasn't happening. LOL. This is probably simple, but well... I don't know how! Really want to put on a thin line around the photo but would also like to know how you would set the width incase I decided to put a fat one on there too. Help? -Alison

Or, you could go to the Styles windows (by double clicking on the photo layer in the Layers palette) and clicking Stroke.

The Stroke feature defaults to a very thin red line, but you can change the color and size easily in the Stroke window. Also, make sure to change the Position from "Outside" to "Inside" for crisp, square corners.

As always, there's more than one way to do something in Photoshop. I find using Stroke very easy because you can do it while the photo is a layer in another document (ie a layout you are working on).

Thanks trinity! Always good to know more than one way to do things. I can see where this would be handy. Thanks! -Alison

One more option: If I'm trying to add a stroke to a photo that is already within a larger LO, I cntrl + click the layer of the photo so it's selected then choose EDIT>STROKE, set my width (I use 50 px frequently), color and the trick is choosing INSIDE for location. This gives you the nice 90 degree angles at the corners. This works well because you can do a lot with it. If it's on it's own layer you can add a shadow that makes it look like it's a separate mat over the photo, (There is one in my gallery if you want a peek, called "just married") or if you apply it directly to the photo then it looks like the old white-bordered polaroid images. Always more than one to skin a cat, so to speak!
