Question mosaics

I have something in mind for a LO, but when I try it I don't like it. I have a large photo that I want to have on one side of the LO but to balance it, on the other side, have squares that were "cut" from different parts of the photo. Still pretty new to photoshop, but I used to do this in paint shop pro 7. I would select the area and usually resize to make the "tiles" all the same size. But this would sometimes alter the proportions, and I am sure that there is a "correct" way to do it. Played with it a little in photoshop, but was having a hard time making my squares all uniform. Is there a way to crop a certain dimension? Kind of like if you used a square punch in traditional scrapbooking. Also for another LO, A wanted to tile the whole photo, but don't know really how to accomplish this and have perfect tiles. Suggestions?

I use Photoshop and maybe I can help! What I would do is make the square with the rectangular marquee tool, then drag it over the area I want to copy (make sure the marquee tool is still selected and not the move tool). Then hit Control-C to copy it and copy it to another layer.

Or another way to do it would be to open the photo you want to copy and select the whole thing, and hit control-C to copy. Then open where you want to make the square, make the square and then do Edit/Paste Into. Then you can move, resize or do whatever you want to the original photo while its still in the square.

Let me know if this works for you!

This just might work, Doris, Thank you! I will try it tonight!

If anyone else has suggestions on other ways to do this please still post. It is always nice to know more than one way to do things! Plus, still need suggestion about doing a large, tiled mosaic.

To make squares all the same size make sure your option (in mine labeled "style") is set to fixed size - you then enter your values. I did a mosaic using the polygon l***o tool with the grid displayed. Meryl

Here's a tutorial that should help...
http://www.escrappers.com/nudge.html

Also, you can go to View/Show/Grid and it make a grid in the background.

One more thing - on your marquee tool you can specify fixed size - then your selection will always be the same (this is what Meryl mentioned above).

But, if you want to be able to select different sized parts of the picture & then end up with them all the same size, I'd suggest using the "fixed aspect ratio" style of marquee. If you want a square, set it 1 to 1. Then your marquee will always be a square. (or for a bunch of rectangles that match - 1 to 2). So, you can select as much as you want, in the exact aspect ratio, crop it, and resize it to the size you want. This way, if you have people in the foreground & the background of the photo (different sized), you can end up with cut out faces all about the same size.

hth!
