Save As or Flatten and then save?

In CS2...
And is there a difference? I've tried it both ways, and the end result looks the same to me. When I Save As Jpeg it automatically flattens all the layers anyway...

So which is the 'correct' way to do it?

Also noticed my molten gold layer style turns UNshiny when I save it in a format other than .psd. Not sure how that will go for printing!

When you flatten it will lock all your bevels. shadows or whatever settings in place. So I would flatten then save.

Flattening then saving seems to help with file size sometimes to.
With your layer styles - some time that does happen - I tend to rasterise the layer style by choosing the layer with the layer style on - right click and choose> conver to smart object - then right click agin and choose >Rasterize. This permanently applies the layer style to the object

Shellyrae: Thanks for the rasterize tip! I was SO disappointed with all my shiny gold became... yellow. Slowly, slowly I'm figuring this Photoshop thing out.

Sometimes you have to use one over the other or merge up from the bottom when you have layer styles. The reason for this is because blend modes are reacting to the layer below them so funky things can happen at times. I've never tried that rasterize tip before so I may need to give that a whirl.

Yep as Serena said - thats why I rasterise everything with a layer style once i know its staying so usually what it looks like is what it will be when its merged

Thumbs up Yes!

It worked! Thank you Shellyrae! I went back and fixed the layout with the gold layer style, and it looks right now. Come to think of it, I've finished four layouts in the past two days (a record like no other, lately!) so I guess I should get them up in my gallery! Thanks again, you're always such a huge help!

Glad I read this thread a few days ago....working on some gold type (style) today and ran into this problem. But for some reason, I'm not getting it to work. The gold ends up darker. I've rasterized text, I've flattened, I've rasterized all layers......will have continue to dink. MMMMM.....

Looks like 3 rings I've drawn that I have an outer glow on also get dimmer....

I've duplicated the text layer (rasterized both text layers) ...so don't know if that is the problem or not. Will attempt the merge from the bottom comment and give that a shot....
