Tutorial: Background filled Text

Hi... received a question about how to create a filled text from a background image and thought I'd post here in case anyone else can find this useful.. a few steps but its all easy.. so here we go:

1. Open the background image
2. Duplicate the Layer (drag background layer to New Icon in layer pal)
3. Choose White as the Background Color
4. Select the Bottom layer and hit Alt+Backspace to fill it (the layer icon will change to white).
5. Select the Duplicate layer and choose the Text Tool
6. Add your Text to this layer and hit Ctrl+Enter when done
7. Now the magic... Drag the new Text Layer down so it is in between the duplicate layer and the background layer.
8. Now... Move the mouse between the top layer and text layer and when the icon changes, hold ALT and Click the mouse..

Voila.. you now clipped your layers together and should have Text filled with the images from the top layer on a white background.

You can then add some layer properties to get a pretty nice effect going... like this one:

Thanks Pesto,
But now that I have my three layers, how do I save this text to use on another layout? How do you copy and paste as new layer on another layout?

The easiest way would be to Flatten the layers, save as a JPG and then just drag into the new layout.

Or.. even better.. just recreate this by using layers over in the layout itself.. The first layer doesn't have to be a background layer.. it just was in my example but if you use it on an existing layout, then you don't need to white layer and can just clip the text layer to a layer with a texture.. make sense?

Another way to achieve a similar effect (for PSCS) is to first type out the text you want to fill then rasterize that text layer. Next, open and select the paper/background you want to use click 'edit..copy'. Next, highlight and select the text layer (blinking dotted lines)and then click 'file..paste into'.

This will create a masked layer over the original text layer. Right click and apply the layer mask on the masked layer and that's it. You're left with the text filled with your background and the original text layer, which you don't need any longer. This works with anything, text, shapes, whatever. If you want to fit the paper better into your text or shape, you can resize the masked layer before you click apply.

Welcome Ang.. and thx SR.. glad to help.

The other method does work but you lose the ability to edit the text and apply layer styles since the text layer is not controlling the text any longer.. but it is great for adding textures to objects.

I'm doing a very simple test of this. I have a white background and a patterned second layer. I do the text as you say above and link it to the layer below. It looks good, however when I try to position or move the text, the background I used on it is not constant. The text just moves around on the background I used. I want the background to stay in the same position that I placed it.
This is such an easy task in PSP but it's turning out to be very complicated in PS.
What I want to do in PS is a like procedure in PSP.

In PSP I open up a background, grab the text tool, and click on selection. I type my text, position it on the background where I want, Click edit, copy, and close the background window.
I open my layout and click "paste as a new layer", That's it.
I can then move it, add a drop shadow, or bevel or do many other adjustments.

I must be missing something in PS, because I have yet to be able to do this.
