If you don't own anything right now, then I would just download a free 30 trial of either Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Elements 5 (or both, one right after the other 30 day expires). Either one of those will do you fine. There are other programs out there of course. If you don't own anything and don't know if you'd even like it, it's the safe way to go. You can go to the tutorial section on this site and see/do the different tuts for the different programs (you'll notice other programs listed also). Do some of the tuts, see if you like it. Everyone has their favorite program. One does this, the other does that, it's all what you get used to. I've used both and am now on Photoshop CS 3. You'll find some people use more than one program. There have been threads on how many people do that even. I just stick with one myself these days. Good luck.

I am so sorry I had you confused with another member who just posted their first LO!

I am trying to find you the comparision list for all the different programs, but right now I am not succeeding and it is hiding too good from me.

Anyone have that link close by and handy?

I use PSPX and just love it, but it is hard to find and I wouldn't consider buying the newer version PSPXI. You can at times find PSPX on sale like at Amazon and such for around $20.00

I also have Adobe Photoshop CS2 which I do really like, just don't use it near as much as I thought I would and the cost of the newer version CS3 is around $600.00

Last night we had a chat where member's could win a free copy of a program called ACDSee Photo Manager &
Photo Editor which is really easy to use.
I am quoting Heidi with this info:

Current prices of ACDSee products:
ACDSee Photo Manager $39.99
ACDSee Photo Editor $49.99 and if you already own Photo manager $34.99
ACDSee Photo Manager, Editor Bundle with free digital kit CD $79.99
See our blog for more info on this and to view the kits.
There is also a 30 free trial of both of these programs.

I will leave the other gals to tell you about all the other programs out there!

I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 and love it! It costs around $90.00, and is pretty difficult, in my opinion, to learn at first, but once you figure it out, Elements can do a lot. I also use the Adobe Organizer to keep track of my photos--it really helps when I have thousands of digital photos on my computer! There are some great tutorials for Elements out there and also some good books, too! I agree with Doris that you should download free trials of the programs you are interested in before plunking down the cash for something and then finding out you're unhappy with it.

I have used PSP and PSE and I would say that PSE is easier to learn. For a beginner I would recommend downloading the free trial versions already mentioned. I've heard too, that learning PSE first is advisable if you plan on moving up to CS3. I wouldn't know about that yet, because I'm still drooling over CS3, waiting for the price to come down a little bit.

Totally biased opinion here LOL but I am a self proclaimed loyal Adobe fan/addict.. OK big geek and it is worth every penny IMHO.
I purchased PSE3 a long time ago.. Adobe offered the $300 CS2 upgrade upgrade and I jumped on it. Haven't quite had the time so I haven't upgraded to CS3 yet.
Plus, if you qualify for academic software you can save a bundle.
Download different software and try them out though, determine your long term use. Personally, I wish I would have started with PSE because it is very similar to CS and the transition would have been easier.
In the end it doesn't matter the software as long as YOU are happy and comfortable with it!! Nothing worse than getting so frustrated that you can't finish your layout
whatever you choose, there is a ton of support here for ya!
