How do I creating transparent cutouts

Hi Everyone: Can you please help me!! I added a rectangle marquee to my transparent layer and filled it with a colour. Now I want to be able to cut an arch shape from the bottom edge of the rectangle (starting on the very bottom right of the rectangle and continuing the same shape cut out to the end of the rectangle evenly spaced) The end result would look like a wall with many arched doors spaced out evenly. Another description would be a valance on a window. I have probably made this more complicated that it needs to be. It's hard to sometimes describe an image. I was actually able to cut out the first arch by using the "subtract" marquee with the rectangle and ellipse tool but then did not want to have to do this each time with each cutout. There must be a better way to remove this transparent arch shape repeatedly from the bottom of the rectangle.

Thanks so much!!
Susan

Fill your rectangangle. On a new layer create your ellipse and fill it. Duplicate this layer over and over for as many "arches" as you want. Group them and align and distribute so that they are even. Now ctrl-click on an ellipse layer...this will select just the ellipse. Now click on the rectangle layer and hit delete. Now delete that ellipse layer. Repeat for all ellipses. Let me know if this is what you needed.

Hi Amanda: This is exactly what I wanted!!! I got as far as duplicating the white ellipses. OK, since I'm still learning, how do I group them? You also mentioned "Now ctrl-click on the ellipse layer...this will select just the ellipse" Once they are "grouped" will this mean there will only be one layer of the ellipses? I'm feeling a little stupid here!! confused:
Thanks so much for your help!!!

Susan

There's a little empty box on the left of the layers palette...click on there and a little link comes up. Any layers you want grouped just click ont hat little link box. This will not merge the layers...just group them.

How do you align them? Can you align in Photoshop Elements 2.0? I am thinking I saw somewhere you couldn't. Thanks for any help!

PSE doesn't let you align...but you can turn on your grid and line them up that way....or turn on a few guides.
