brush and plug in folders

Can I store my plug in folders and brush folders outside of cs2? I have large files and it takes cs2 a long time to load with them inside of the program itself. I'm sure it's possible, I just would love for someone to tell me how.

Thanks so much,

Brenda

Yeah definitely store them outside your PS folders. You can put them in any folder you want to create for them and then go to Edit>Preferences (at the bottom) and then click Plugins and Scratch disks, and put your plugins folder in the space provided. And when you want to load brushes, just load them from that folder.

I *think* they will still load into memory using the preferences route. If you have lots of plug-ins and brushes, but you know you won't be using a bunch of them and don't want Photoshop to take the time (or memory) to load them, rename the ones you won't be using with a tilde in front of them. When you launch Photoshop, it will ignore those files. Next time you want to use them, rename them by removing the tilde and when launched, Photoshop will know they are there again.

ADDED: You could also still use other folders for your brushes and plugins and then copy shortcuts into the folder set up in preferences. Copying and deleting shortcuts as you need them would probably be faster than renaming with the tilde.

HTH,

Smart girls,

Thanks,

I'll print your comments out and give it a whirl. I use PSPX also, so I wanted to be able to share plug in's between the same programs from just one folder. I always store my folders outside of PSP but i'm new to CS2 so I thought i'd get advice from the experts.

thanks so much,

Brenda

On my hard drive I have a folder named Photoshop Extras which is divided up into sub folders of Brushes, PlugIns, LayerStyles etc. Inside Brushes I have one folder for unzipped and used brushes also subdivided into brush subject. The same for PlugIns etc.
That way the only files that are in Photoshop are all default. The default must remain in the actual Photoshop folder to stop it throwing a fritz when starting up.
Sometimes to make it easier if I have downloaded several files I will create a temp folder titled Brushes Install so I know I havent unzipped or looked through them yet.
To make it easy to give all designers proper credit all files have the designer's initials in the file name and alongside the Brushes and PlugIns folders I have another folder titled Terms Of Use which has a single copy of all relevant info to save space.
Now...has that confused you enough?
