I've been through the tutorial here, but when it (the tutorial) tells me to select my "buckle" layer and then click control and the buckle layer to select the entire buckle, all it does is deselect the layer. How does this work in PSCS2??

In CS2 you need to control-click exactly on the thumbnail in the layers palette.

Previous versions allowed you to control-click anyplace on the layer, but CS2 is slightly different. When you control-click on the little thumbnail, you should see "marching ants" around what is on that layer.
