Sure you can ungroup it. However I don't ungroup them as I don't have any reason to, especially if I am keeping the psd file. I like to have the file organized.

It is also really handy for moving a group of layers from one layout to another - like several overlays, styled layers, etc. I often do this when I'm making papers, etc. Mostly, like Nancy, I do it to keep everything organized on those layouts that have a kajillion layers.
