Need stroke help!

I need some help with the stroke command

1) How can I get my stroke on a different layer than my picture, so that I can edit it separately, or delete it if necessary?

2) I've created a clipping mask so that my font is filled with my background paper. Now, how do I create a stroke for the font? Can I get it on a separate layer?

Thanks so much for any help!

I'm sure there are umteen different ways to do this, but this is how I do it:

Go to your type layer

Click path tab (on layers palette)>
Load path as selection (3rd icon to the left of trash can on the bottom of the path palette)

Create new layer above your paper layer

Click path tab>
Make work path from selection (2nd icon to the left of trash can on the bottom of the path palette)>
Stroke path with brush (2 more icons to the left)

If you want a solid stroke- you'll probably want to use a round brush and set the spacing to 1%

HTH

OMG - I've never worked with paths before! I thought it was going to be something simple

It is simple Andrea- give it a try!

Otherwise I suppose you could make your font a tad bigger and put it in the layer behind your patterned alpha and fill it with whatever solid color.

Try the paths though

OK - I tried the paths. And I have learned something which is ... I have a lot to learn about paths. I'm not familiar with that palette or the tools, so I'm going to have to practice with them.

But at least you got me started! Thanks for the incentive!!

I actually figured out another way to add the stroke. I realized that I should merge my clipping mask layer with my text layer. Once I did, then I created a new layer above my text layer, did CTRL+click on my text layer and then added the stroke - which was placed on the new layer. Yippeeee!

Now to work on paths ...
