Nifty Tricks!

Ok so I am VERY excited to have learnt two new and very nifty tricks for photoshop CS over the past week or so.

The first being the 'cntrl G trick' to paste the above layer onto the font below! That is a VERY cool trick! I used this one to paste the photo onto the font in this lay out

The next is something so simple I can't believe I didn't already know it but it's the 'shift click' trick with the paint brush to make straight lines in whatever brush stroke you like. I used that one in this layout to make the dotted line - simple but nifty now I know the trick!

and I am loving using this trick to make a layout with lots of dotted lines that should be done soon!

So was wondering if others also have some nifty tricks up their sleeve that they'd like to share. Simple or complex, what is your favorite nifty trick and how do you like to use it?

Kate

Curves

I recently learned a pretty cool trick a while back with curves. If you open up the curves menu, you will see three eyedroppers on the bottom right (white, gray, and black). You can use these to automatically correct the brightness of your photos. All you do is use Threshold to find your whitest white and your blackest black. Once you have those spots on your page identified, you open curves and click the white dropper on the whitest spot, your black dropper on the blackest spot, and the gray dropper on any shade of gray (has to be a true shade of gray between white and black to work) and your photo will automatically correct itself. This helps immensely with those photos that are too dark. I know these directions are a little long, but I use this trick all the time.

btw, thanks for the "shift click" trick, I'm going to have to check that out!

I just learned a new one last night...Cntrl+F repeats the last filter you applied (ok I know it's in the menu, but I never look there)

also Edit -> fill will fill a whole selected area, even if the pixels are all different colors, unlike the paint bucket which only fills one dot at a time if the area is all dotted (did that make sense????) I was doing something last night where every pixel in an area was a scattering of black and white, and I needed to fill the whole area white...the paint bucket would only fill individual black pixels, because they weren't next to other black pixels, but the edit->fill command filled the whole selected area...

You all probably knew these anyway, but I figured I didn't until last night so maybe someone else didn't too

Thanks for posting all these more-than-nifty tips! I wish I had one to share but still learning PS. I reallly love that you can copy layer styles to any layer.. that is the extent of my niftiness today

One that I use a lot is to move layers around.

CTRL + [ this moves the layer down one
CTRL + ] this moves the layer up one
CTRL + SHIFT + [ moves that layer all the way down to the bottom
CTRL + SHIFT + ] moves that layer all the way up to the top

In the area of trick in PS is my favorite book right now ... "Down and Dirty Tricks" by Scott Kelby. The kids got it for me for Christmas and I keep it by my side while I'm working...

Each "trick" is a quick tidbit and they have them grouped by kind of function or task. I try to learn a new one every week, depending on what I'm working on at the moment.
