Basic Question from a beginner

As a beginner I'll try my best to put this into usable terms (sorry in advance) . I'm trying to create text using the texture of it's background. For instance if I have a background of lets say clouds and I want to create text from the cloud background -- How would I do this? I can get the text to become transparent but when I try to cut/paste it it ends up being the original font color I started with. Any tips would be helpful. I know this is probably a simple procedure, but I've been struggling with it. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you use masks. Yikes, you ask what is that? Not really sure but know how to do it. It is likely that there is a faster/better way but this will get you where you need to go.
1. Have your image open (the one with the clouds).
2. On the next layer, your text layer, lay down your text. Do not use the text tool per se but the Horizontal Type Text Tool (found underneath the Text tool). Ignore the fact that things go pink. Once you commit to the text, the pink will disappear.
3. Now you have a selection marquee running around your text.
4. If you change your tool to the mover tool, go inside one of the blinking letters, you can drag the text to a new layer or document. It will be filled with the clouds.

I am the world's worst instructor/tutorial writer. If this is only as clear as mud, let me know what part is incomprehensible and I will try to clarify. Good luck!

Just to add to what Nevermore said,
If your text is already typed out, you can just turn the color of the text to black and go under "Select" then "Color Range" and click on your text. That will automatically make an outline of your text. Then while your selection is still on click on your patterned paper layer and choose "Select Inverse" and push the delete button. And that should leave everything you want. Anyhow, hth!

Both methods worked perfectly! I new it was something simple, just couldn't get it right. Thanks for you easy steps. My graphic designer at work is not the best teacher and once back home I couldn't remember his technique. Thanks again!!!!

Oh, too cool! Great solution if you have already got some text laid down! But even better, using Colour Range as a selection tool is great! Haven't been able to really goof around, but looks like it is could be very useful adjunct to magic wand. Hot dog, I learn something about this program every single time I sit down at the computer.
