Question How do I cut out an image?

Hi! I am just wanting to cut out an image and use the cut out on a page. I have read how to extract the image, but then it appears with the white background. I just want the cut out picture and nothing around it. Does this make any sense? Help! I have just started using photoshop for more than touching up photos and cropping.

You can just make a selection of the part of the picture that you want in your lo and then use the move it to your new document with the directional arrow (top right button in the main pallette). Also, if you could make a selection of the part you would like to not be in the picture and erase it to remove the white. Hope this helps! If I'm off base here let me know and I'll see if there is another solution to your problem.

Heather

making background clear / not white

in photoshop if you make a selection on the "background layer" and hit delete it will turn the background the color you have selected on the left in your color swatch for background. Double click the background layer on your layer palette and hit OK. Then when you hit delete to remove around your selection it will then go to clear and not a background color. If I confused you just email me at staciesstuff@bellsouth.net and I'll try to help more

What I do is save the original picture as a copy and then pull it up in PS. I then resave as a psd file. Then go to filter and extract. After you have traced around the part you want to extract, fill it with the paint bucket and hit save. Since it was saved originally as a psd file, it will automatically save the extracted part on a transparent background. Save it and then do any clean-up necessary by erasing. If you zoom your photo large while in the extraction and have your paint brush very small and trace right on the edge, you will have very little if any clean-up to do. HTH
