Machine Wash Set
I have the Machine Wash Set and love it.
Its basically a collection of HUGE b&w texture files. I almost never use the actions, but use the images as overlays all the **** time.
I copy the file, paste into my project, resize, then either define a pattern or make a brush.
They are way cool to use as erasers on your final merged image layer, (or at various opacities on several layers to enhance depth) or as paint brushes. Put them on a seperate layer and you can apply layer effects , like your back ground pattern, or bevel & emboss to get depth effects. You can also go in and selectively erase "too loud" parts, or move slections to areas where they work better. A lot more control than there is using the action "right out of the box" as it were. As with most distressing effects, a light hand helps avoid a kitchy, processed appearance.
I have also gotten spectacular results resizing the overlays in proportion with your project, setting a pattern, then using the pattern as a brush texture with the Art History tool.
A warning though, these files are enormous. As jpegs, they measure 5400 x5400 (18 inches square) and working with them can be cumbersome. Reduce the desired image by 50%, copy, then paste. Close the Machine Wash file without saving changes, or simply select a specific area you'd like to use if you don't want the whole thing; copy, paste, and resize.
If you are hesitant to commit to the full purchase, surf Google Images for textures. There are literally thousands of free, downloadable textures out there, many in 1024x768 size, which helps avoid that cheezy seamless repeating effect.
Some of the best textures I have found on the net weren't even from Photoshop sites at all. Poke around on wallpaper catalog sites, many have large size sample jpgs. Convert them to greyscale, tweek levels, thresholds, equalize, and voila! There are manymany "chips" out there that have distressed plaster, combed, flogged, and dry brushed textural papers.
You can also resize and save the images as psd's in your texturizing morgue, they work fabulously in Splat.
Dont get me wrong, I love the Machine wash set and would buy any subsequent collections in a heartbeat. The magic is not in the action though, but in the texture files, thats what you're paying for. Unless you have the time or inclination to go out and shoot your own images and process them similarly, Machine Wash is a treasure box.
