'stroke path with brush' issues

I have PS CS.

Ok I am wanting to make a black line with white dots down it so have created my long thin black rectangle then on a new layer have used the single column marquee tool to create my line, made that into a work path and then used the handy 'stroke path with brush' using a circular brush of the right size where I've spaced out the dots. But when I do it it seems to be 'stroking' the path twice so I get two lines of dots over each other rather than a single clear line of spaced dots... if that makes sense.

Can't figure out where I am going wrong or maybe I am coming at this problem from the wrong angle. Ideas would be much appreciated!

thanks

Kate

The problem is that the single column marquee tool is actually a very thin rectangle, not actually a line.

Here's how I would do it:

Use the pen tool to draw a line. Make sure it's set to draw a path instead of a shape (in the options bar at the top, choose the button with the pen in the box.)
Click once at the start point of your line, then again and the end point of your line. Then you can change to the brush tool and stroke the path you just created.

Let me know if you're still having trouble

Hey, where is the "stroke path with brush" feature? I knew there must be a way to do this, but I've never figured it out.

On the paths pallet, down at the bottom, it's the unfilled circle. If you hold your cursor over it, the tool tip should appear that says "stroke path with brush". Make sure you're on the layer you want to draw on, and have the brush tool selected before clicking the "stroke path" button.

you can also use any Line or Shape tool to draw a path, making sure the little Pen icon is checked at the top of the Options Bar. Then draw the shape: it'll be a path (vector) that you can then Stroke with any brush. That stroke will be a Raster graphic, so if you edit the Path the stroke will stay put.

For a line, however, it's easier to just use the regular brush tool and click once, then move the cursor and Shift-click again. It'll connect the two points with a straight line. But the Path function is really useful for lots of other things.

Let us know how it goes!

aha!

I knew it would be something odd like that and it makes total sense now!

And I learnt a new trick! I didn't know I could make straight lines with the brush tool click trick! Cool! Love it when I learn a new trick and it's usually something so simple but that makes life sooooo much easier!

Thank you so much you are all so lovely and helpful!

glad you learned some new stuff: that's what's important! Now you have options to accomplish what you need

Also, while dragging a brush stroke, hold Shift and it'll go in a 90 or 45 degree line. The Shift-click is better for straight lines on other angles
