making smaller "tile" and expanding into full page?

I am not sure if this will make sense or not. Is there a way when I am creating 12x12 300 dpi background papers that are like stripes, checks, all over prints, plaids, or watercolor look to create a smaller section of the paper which I can then expand into a full sheet of paper? I don't want to just enlarge a smaller section with the pull arrows because I don't want it to enlarge the actual stripes or checks. I just want many more "tiles" of the same pattern I create. And I want the places that these "tiles" join to appear seamless to the eye. Can someone figure me out and help? Thanks. Kelley

I am only familiar with Photoshop but you can do this. I am at work so I am going off of memory, bear with me. Maybe someone else can give you exact directions. Anyway here we go, if you create a 2x2 or what ever size pattern, then I think it's under Edit select define pattern save it then open a new file say 12x12 and them select Fill, I think it is under Edit, but like I say I am not where I can access the program. Maybe this will help and maybe not.

Well in pse 2, this is how I think I would do this, if I understand you correctly:

Open a new 2x2 image file, as mentioned above, and then drag and drop all of your various backgrounds into that file, making sure to place the pattern carefully so that what you see when you view that layer is how you want the finished piece to look. Then, after all of your bgs are added and adjusted, I would simply use the crop tool to eliminate the unwanted portions of each layer. Then drag and drop each new 2x2 piece into your layout, taking care to patch them carefully together. HTH and please post here when you get it figured out!

You can save as pattern in PSE2 - also with that 2" square you can run it through the offset filter to see if it tiles properly before you save it as a pattern.

Yep - I was doing something else! So ignore my ealier post.

I do this by creating the pattern and using the selection tool to select the part I want to repeat, and then select edit, create pattern. Then select Selection, Deselect, make a new layer, and fill it with your new pattern. To do this, use the fill tool, select pattern instead of foreground, and use the drop down menu to surf to your newly created pattern and fill the new layer.

Yes, Edit>Define pattern in PS and PSE. You can download a filter for PSE that makes seamless tiles, Simple Filters. PSP and PS have one included.
In PSP, any open image can be used as a pattern. Open the Materials Dialog, click the Pattern Tab, and open the Drop Down pattern menu. All the open images will be there as patterns. They won't be seamless unless you run the filter, though.
Save anything you want to use later in the My Files>My PSP Files>Patterns folder. In PSE, save it in the Adobe>PSE>Presets>Patterns folder, and in PS save them anywhere and just choose Load Patterns in the Patterns menu and browse to it.
It's such a blast! In my PSE class, an entire lesson is dedicated just to creating seamless patterns and textures. They're so useful for cutting into shapes and making elements. Have fun!
