Creating Sets Out of Backgrounds

Hi everyone!
I saw a tutorial over at scrapbookgraphics.com (Maya's site, I think) on how to make frames, etc. out of a certain background, but unfortunately it was for photoshop. I have photoshop elements right now, and would love to know how I could do this.
If anyone has any ideas for me, please let me know....
Thanks ahead of time.
Rosa

Is this what you had in mind? I have never used Photoshop, so I don't know what that whole paths thing is. I created this by doing the following:

1. open the background file. Select all. Copy.
2. File / New from clipboard.
3. Insert a new layer.
4. Draw the shape on the new layer.
5. Hold the control key, and click on the shape layer in the layers palette. That selects the shape.
6. Click on the layer you created from the background.
7. Select / Inverse
8. Edit / Clear. You will have your shape, cut from the background layer.
9. Delete the shape layer (not the one from the background).
10. Bevel and add shadow.

I think this looks quite a bit like the one from the tutorial. HTH.

making elements with bg paper

I figured out a way to do this. Here it is. There may be an easier way but this works.

1. Open a new page make your background transparent. It is easier to see what you are doing.
2. Select a patterened paper or make a new layer and add whatever color you want. Resize so it is a little under your selected page size so you will not have to clean up any stray edges after you cutout your shape.
3. Using your custom shape tool, select a frame shape.
4. Apply this shape over the paper layer. It will make another layer named shape 1.
5. Get your magic wand tool and hit the frame so you have dancing ants. You will get a window that will tell you that you have to simplify the shape. Hit OK. Then the dancing ants will appear.
6. Hit control, shift and I. This will invert your selection.
7. Now on the layers pallette select your patterened paper layer and then hit delete.
8. Go back to your shape 1 layer in the layer pallette and delete the shape
9. Your cutout of your patterened paper frame will appear hit ctrl D to take away the dancing ants.
10. Bevel and add a shadow using the layer styles tab.
11. You have a frame. dave in psd format and you can use it over again.

If you have any questions. PM me and I will try to explain anything you didn't get here.

Smile Another way

1. Open new transparent layer
2. Add shape
3. Open paper - drag over shape with the move tool
4. Hit Ctrl/g
5. Go to Layer - Merge visible
6. Add shadow and bevel
7. Save as PNG
Works in PS Elements and Photoshop
