brushes help

Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong? I've been having problems with using the brushes. When I apply a brush (on a new layer) I don't know what to do next. Everytime I click off of the brush tool it turns into the dancing ants. I am in mask mode to apply the brush. Is that wrong? The selection mode just gives me the dancing ants to begin with (instead of being able to see the effect). I've tried deselecting and selecting the move tool. Seems like it should be a simple solution or setting but I can't figure it out. I know I have been able to use them and have them stay before but I have no idea how??? I hope this makes sense.

I figured it out!

Okay. I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was trying to use the selection brush instead of just the brush tool. I'm still new at this program... Works just fine if you use the right tool!!

For others that run into this problem.. when using your brushes be sure you are using the brush that is listed 6 down from thel left in your tool bar not the 3rd one. The third one is the selection brush. The 6th one is your creative brush

Talking

Thanks! It's good to know that even the senior members struggle with these types of issues too.
Have you ever made a Dr's appointment because you know that you sickness is not going to go away on it's own just to find a couple of hours later you start feeling better and end up cancelling the appointment? That's what I felt like with this... I struggled with this problem for months and just knew that I could find the answer either in the forums somewhere or in the book with no luck. Finally I post my problem and then I figure it out myself!!

Thank You Tanya!! It does feel great to figure things out on my own. I just wish it wouldn't have taken so long. Love your work by the way, as well as Amy's and Valarie's.
