well, congrats for getting this far & welcome to a great board! I may not be the best person to answer this, so if you get more answers, pay attention to them too.
if no one had told you, open your layers palette - this will reallllllly help you! duplicate your brad layer a few times (just in case you make mistakes).
when working in the open brad window, i suggest making another layer below the brad. all your duplicate brad layers can be below the new layer. since the background of your brad is white, i would make the new layer black or hot pink (whatever is also different from your brad element). that way you can see what you've erased and what you still have to do. if you just work from white to the transparent grid (which is white & grey) it is hard to see what you've done. when you first make this layer you won't see the color except in your layers palette.
make sure you are in the layer of the brad. if you are using the magic wand to select the brad, click on it, and then reverse the selection (Select > Inverse). You have now selected the white background (the crawling ants around the brad look the same, but see the ants around the outside, too?) Delete. this should wipe out the white stuff. you should see your black or pink background. but notice in the layers palette that the brad is alone on a layer and the black or pink is on a different layer.
if your magic wand was set to the right sensitivity you're almost done. if not, you can back up and try again, or move one of your duplicate images up and try again.
i also like to erase or use the magic eraser when the image is difficult to select with the magic wand (it has too many colors, or something).
good luck!
