using brushed in pse

Can someone please explain why when I use a brush it disappears? I have made a new layer and have used the mask mode and as soon as I click on another tool the image disappears. I get the chasing ants. What am I doing wrong? How do I keep the image on my page? I am so frustrated with pse. I would really appreciate any help. I have several books but nothing seems to address my problem. To me they are just too vague. Thanks...

Hmm. I'll start this by saying I'm not PSE expert.

However, I think the problem is that you're using the selection brush instead of the brush tool.

Selection brush is third on the left tool bar; brush tool is sixth.

In the attached file, I've got the brush tool selected.

Is that the one you're using?

What version of PSE is that attachment from?

I have PSE2 and the brush that you have highlighted in your tool bar is different then the brush I have there. Mine is an impressionist brush......

If there is an easier version or if the powers for brushes and their abilities are alot better in one of the higher level versions of Photoshop I am soooo interested in getting it.

Would love to hear more info from anyone willing to share on this topic!

Thanks ~Christina~

Oh my gosh...........!!!!!!

I am going to answer my own question here.......
After an email from a friend I realized I MUST be missing something.......I didn't have the same brush that everyone else has..........

I of course went and looked again and realized that it WAS there but I had it on the impressionist version of the brush on the top tool bar..........duhhhhh.....hadn't even noticed the difference. Actually you can right click and choose either brush tool or impressionist brust tool.

Don't you just hate it when the obvious is starring you RIGHT in the face!!! LOL

using pse brushes

For anyone looking at this forum. I was using the selection brush instead of the tool brush. The tool brush works and solved my problem. Thank you so much Janet for your help.
