Making part of a jpeg transparent

Hello,
I am new here so I hope I make some sense! I am trying to make the background of an image I have transparent. It is a black and white drawing. SO far in Photo Shop Elements 6 I am able to take the magic wand and separate the background field from the drawing, but what do I do next to make that area transparent?

Many thanks in advance!

Best Regards,
Steve

Well.. what you want to do is isolate the foreground elements from the background as you've done. Now, copy that element (Ctrl-C). Open a new document and select a transparent background and then Paste (Ctrl-v) the object on top. You will now have your object on a transparent background... there are other ways to do it but this works well. Keep in mind you might need to clean up your image a bit if elements of the background made its way into your magic wand selection... use the eraser tool to get rid of it.

If you were using CS3, I'd recommend one of the many masking addons on the market that make this a breeze.. My favorite and one that I use weekly is Vertus Fluid Mask... a wonderful product that makes extraction very easy.

Thanks a bunch!

Hello Pesto,
I would like to extend a large "thank you" for being so kind as to help me out with this. Much appreciated.

I did not know anything about html, css, or photoshop elements until a month ago. I did the thing from scratch in text editor. Here is what you just helped me finish.

All the photos were taken by me within the last year. (check photo and material page)

Thanks for helping me out on that logo!

Best Regards,
Steve

Vertus Fluid Mask...fantastic program. I use it to extract a person, usually a head shot, out of photo that is not real good because the background sucks. I then add another background and turn it into a painting with Corel Painter IX. Sells real well...
