Is there an easy way to create a Quick Page from a non-layered layout brought in from another program?

I have tried by duplicating my original layout, opening a new blank canvas with a transparent background, and dragging the copy to the new canvas. I tried using the lasso tool, to highlight where I want the cut-out to be, but I find it impossible to make a straight line with the lasso.
And the marquee tool won't let me cut off corners and go around leaves, etc. (or will it?).

I am new to PSE so simplifed instructions would be most gratefully received. Thanks for any help.

It depends on the original layout - you could fill the section with a solid color and then do a selection that way. You might be better off doing it in pieces though so for example start by using the larquee tool to remove straight edge areas. then use the magnetic lassso or even the polygonal lasso to trace the edges of shaped areas.
You may find it even easier just to use the eraser tool and erase all the areas you want gone
