Trying to delete a background

Hi everyone, I need your help again, I'm getting a little frustated. I am trying to extract a picture of my son from the background (which has very similar color to his hair). I have tried to google some tutorial but none have helped. He has curly hair which makes my task even more difficult. I have tried using the eraser tool and the magic extration (the one you draw a line and it picks up "magically" the subject), not much magic going on with my picture. I hope someone can help me with this. I am trying to use this picture for his b-day invitation which has its own background that matches with everything else KWIM.
TIA
Yanelis

If he colors are too similar, the "magic" extractor can't work much magic. You could try doing a levels adjustment layer and see if you can lighten the picture up so you get some difference between his hair and the background. I often will do a rough selection with the lasso, and then use the selection brush tool to add or subtract from my rough selection.

Thank you Trish, I tried to play with the levels and then erasing, this helped me a lot.
