I usually make a separate layer for this. Just draw a rectangle the size of the background and put it on the bottom of the stack. Then you can use the tools as outlined above. The shape can be hidden if it gets in the way.

Vertical Centers
Bottom Edges

Left Edges
Horizontal Centers
Right Edges

Hold down SHIFT and select the layers you want to align. Then choose the option you want.

Try playing around with the Arrange and Distribute tools as well. I know you'll find them very useful.
