Lightbulb Tutorial on how to do B&W with some color showing through

Hey there.

Ok...I had this great idea for a layout but I need some help.

My daughters both have beautiful blue eyes. I want to do a picture in B&W with just their blue eyes showing through. I figured out how to turn the picture B&W with an adjustment layer and then erase it on top of their eyes to let the bottom layer show through...the only problem is their eyes are not quite blue enough in my pictures to really show that much differently then the gray in the black and white.

I am not sure what to do...enhance their eye color so it looks more like it truly is in real life? Or alter the B&W shading some how....

I have seen pictures like it before and I am sure the eye color is enhanced...but I can't figure out how to do it...without it looking very fake....

Any ideas...or is their somewhere I can go to look up some more tutorials on how to do that?

Any advice would be very appreciated...

Thanks!

My advice would be to ...(this is how I do it anyway) use your elliptical marquee and and make a circle around the eye...then open a new layer and fill it with the color blue you like then deselect and change the blending modes and opacity until you find what you like .....Hope this helps

Or you could use the selection brush (with a soft brush) and then do an hue/saturation adjustment layer and boost the saturation up. Don't forget you can always use the opacity slider too to lighten the effect.

Since the color (except for the eyes) is hidden underneath the black and white - just increase the saturation of the color version til the eyes look right to you If the black and white is still to strong just lower the contrast and or brightness a little.

Thanks guys! I figured it out. I did a little of what you all said. I actually found another picture where there eyes were REALLY bright...and i didn't end up having to boost the color. But I learned alot along the way! thank you so much for your help!

I know this is a "bit" late...well, over a year anyway. The way I have done this is to open a colour image (then open a second one and change it to B&W) give one of the layers a different name - probably the altered one. Layer the B&W over the top of the colour then erase the area of this layer that you want the original colour to show through. In this case the eyes. Works well and is uncomplicated, it can also be done in many programs too.

Evelyn,

Thank you...that is basically what I did. I made a copy of my picture and then made the top layer black and white and then erased the eyes. I haven't finished it yet...but when I do i will post the layout.

Thanks for your advice....and you were not a year late! It was less then a month ago that I posted the first question...I appreciate all ideas I can get...so thanks for responding!
