I'm a newbie and have been playing with some of the tutorials and used the bevel option a couple of days ago to make a slide. Today I tried to use bevel again and when I click on bevel in layer styles I get the message "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." I have PSE 4.0 - trial version.

I made sure that I have the right layer selected, I've tried hitting the bevel key when I have different tools selected, I tried it using other documets ... I can't think of what else to do.

Did I develop a bug in my software, or is there something I missed?

I didn't use the trial version (bought the full version) and don't have any problems like that. When did you install the trial version? What type of file are you working with? Have you tried restarting your computer? There could just be something silly preventing PSE from working with you file (file protection comes to mind too). Keep posting details so we can try to help you out.

I installed the trial 10 days ago, so I've got 3 weeks left until it expires - so that's not the problem. And I've restarted my computer and still have the same problem.

I've tried to click the bevel tool on circles or slides or whatever that I've created on a new document, as well as opened existing photoshop documents to try and add the bevel. I've tried this on a transparent background and on a layer with a patterned background layer below it..

I can still add drop shadows and all of the other things under effects in the layers toolbar. Any suggestions?
