Saving layers in PSE and DIP

I am new to PSE and the file type psd. I am use to DIP and saving things with layers in .png format. I hope I can phrase this question clearly.

Is it possible to create the layout in PSE and save it in as .png with its layers so that it will open in DIP and I can still edit it? Or does saving it as a png in PSE automaticaly flatten it forever? I've tried this with no luck - was hoping I just didn't know the trick, if one exists.

and vice versa -

Is it possible to create a layout in DIP and save it as a png and be able to open it in PSE with layers? Again, my attempts have failed to get layers. Is there something I should be doing, or is it just not possible?

Melanie

Nope. Can't be done. You can open a psd file in DIP but it will be flattened. Same thing if you open a PNG+ file in PSE - it will be flattened. Only way around it would be to save each layer as separate elements and "reconstruct" in the other program.

Okie dokie, then. That's what I was afraid of. That's a bummer, too, cause there are some things that are easier/better in one program than in the other and I have to flip flop to make things the way I want. Argh. Ah, well. Guess that's life!

Thanks!

Can you work with .tif files in DIP? I have been saving layed as layered .tif instead of layered psd files in PSE4, and it saves all layers to edit later if needed. Hope this is an option for you to work with.

No, I just saved an unflattened tiff file and when I opened it up again it was flattened.
