png files- now what?!

I posted this in a different forum but thought I'd try here also. I can never get too much info on this subject! Anyway, I am real newbie to this digital scrapbooking site. I try things and they don't work right and I go back to paper scrapbooking. Try again. Get frustrated. But my New Year's resolution is to dip my toes in a bit further. The first problem is that I have downloaded all sorts of 'brushes' that are in PNG format. I am using a Mac, OSX10.4, PSE3. Now what? I can't figure out to get these PNG files into PSE3! I printed out something where the title is, "How to convert a PNG file/stamp to a brush in Photoshop Elements." I just don't get it. http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/chat/...milies/mad.gif
So I am now turning to you, my mentor, to help me at least get this far! Baby steps I think. Thanks for any help! Judy

Welcome back Judy! Don't give up- just keep asking away!

First off- I have PSCS so I hope this makes sense for you.

You actually don't need to turn a png file into a brush- you can use it *as is*. Some designers offer their brushes in a png format for users whose programs don't support brushes.

If you have your png file open and your layout open- you can just drag your png object right over onto your layout. Both windows have to be *smaller*- not maximized- hope that makes sense. I think some people copy/paste, but this is how I do it.

HTH Holler if you need more help.

Well, that didn't work. I have PSE3 open, both files open and tiled. What 'tool' do I select to drag and drop? I tried the hand but that didn't work. Judy

try taking your rectangle marquee tool drawing around the png you want and then dragging it over.
Hope that helps

You should be able to drag from the layers palette of the png file to the layout file.

Left click on the layer and hold down, then drag from the layers palette over into the work area until you are hovering over the top of the layout image, and then release the mouse button. That should put the layer into your layout image onto a new layer of its own.

Hope this helps.

you need to have the move tool selected (looks like a plus sign with an arrow pointing at it) to be able to drag and drop it into another file.

It worked! I wasn't selecting the right tool- using the Move tool seemed to do the trick. Now my next question is: is there a way to install all these png files that I have so that I can access them easier and organize them in such a way so that I can see them? Would they be considered brushes even if they are alphabets? And how to I put them in the correct 'folder'? I have some photo frames that I want to put in with the brushes file but don't know how to do that. Thanks for the help everyone! Judy
