Beginner needs help with "adding pixels"

I've had PSE 2.0 for quite some time and have wanted to digitally scrap. I've sat down with the program before and have noticed I'm struggling with a large learning curve (I'm not computer illiterate, either!!!). After the holidays, I've been determined to digitally scrap and am trying to create some test projects.

I'm really frustrated when adding layers because everytime I try to add a background color or a photo, I keep getting a message that "no pixels" were selected.

Can someone help before I ditch PSE and find some new software? I hate to do that because I have a DVD that has shown me some really cool stuff....there are some variances between the DVD and my PC setup. The DVD illustrates using PSE with a Mac and I'm a Windows user.

Any suggestions will greatly help.

Okay this is just a thought. LOL I don't have PSE but when you are adding the color are you one a viewable layer? Meaning it's not turned off right?

Okay again that was just a thought as I really don't know PSE. LOL I'm sure someone will come by that can help you some more. Good Luck!! Hope you get it to work for you.
I know when I first bought psp it took me some time to learn that then I decided to upgrade to pscs2. WOW...Now I'm still learning that. LOL

Are you trying to move an element (Photo, paper, brad, etc.) to a blank canvas (new document)? If so, make sure you have your move tool selected (keyboard shortcut capital V) I've noticed that type of message when I try to move a layer, but don't have the move tool selected.

Try that and if it doesn't help, give a shout...I'll be around most of the day and will do my best to help!

Not sure about PSE either, but I get that message in PSP if I am on a layer that doesn't contain any image/pixels, then I have to make sure I am on the right layer that actually has something on it and move that one instead.

Another thing, if you have something selected with marching ants, the marching ants need to be surrounding the image, not the edges of the canvas, like say your selection is somehow inverted, there are many ways to select an item and it is like having to turn your selection inside out to get the right area to move...now isn't that confusing!!

Are you dragging and dropping new files into the project you are working on?
I sort of cheat in this area... Right-Click on the layer you want to add to the main project, select "duplicate layer", and then use the drop-down menu to say which file you want to add it to. If this doesn't help, just shout at all of us again
I have used PSE 2.0 and 3.0 and 4.0 since I started digi-scrapping this year, so it is still somewhat in my memory.

I sent you a PM [Private Message] You can read this by looking at the right hand of the main screen ... about half-way down you will see the words "Private Messages" ... just click that to see your message

Thanks to everyone who answered. I think my problem was that I was not selecting the "move" tool.

I will keep on keeping on with this program!

Thanks again!
