Cutting exact size shapes

How does one cut an exact sized shape in PSE? I know about the crop tool, and it works for larger sizes, but I just tried to cut a bunch of photos into exactly 2 inches by 2 inches. The crop tool says it is set that way, but my cuts were much larger. I was able to reduce them down on the layout by using the shift key and dragging them into the size I wanted, but there must be an easier way.

What I want to be able to do is to cut photos in exact sizes so that they can be aligned across the bottom of the page--say 2 inches high by 1 3/4 inches wide (so that you've allowed for some white space between the photos). How does one do that? And also, is there a way to align them perfect across the page with exact amounts of white space between them?

Thanks for any help.
Elise

I think that if you put in width and height you are actually resizing the image rather than just cropping it. The help file is a little hard to interpret on this point. But I test drove it (lol). The finished image is 2 x 2 but it is a whole lot larger than you would suspect because the resolution is up around 1237 dpi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want a straight crop (no resampling), the best idea I can think of is to use the selection marquee set to 2 inches. Once you have placed the marquee where you want it, go to Image, Crop and bob's your uncle.

As for the second point, using PSCS, if you put each photo on its own layer, then link them, a new set off options shows up in the toolbar once you hit the move tool including align bottoms, align vertical centre etcetera. Will automatically space those little puppies for you.

HTH.

you have to put in the right resolution as well. If you're scrapping 200dpi, put 200 in the box. So 2x2x200 and it'll resample correctly

this is a great way to get a ton of those tiny contact-sheet photos onto a layout. Crop just the parts you want to include, and they all end up identically sized.
