Quick way:

Open you picture. Then use the Custom Shape Tool to draw the shape you choose over your picture. Your going to use this shape as a guide to cut out your picture, so move it around and shrink/enlarge until it's in the correct position over your picture. (You can decrease the opacity on the shape in the Layers Palette to help see through the shape).

Now, while holding down the Ctrl key, click on the shape layer in the Layers Palette. You should get marching ants around your shape. Next, and this is the key part, click on your PHOTO layer in the Layers Palette so it is the active layer.

Finally, since you don't want to cut out the inside of your shape but the outside, hit Ctrl + Shift + I which will select the inverse area. Now hit Delete. This should erase everything on your photo but what was inside the shape. However, you might not be able to see it because the shape is in the way. Delete the shape layer now.

HTH. PM me if that didn't make sense.

Try clicking the shape tool in the detachable tools menu. Then up in the menu bar click the custom shape icon on the left and select the shape you want on the right.

In PS 7 the Shape Tool looks like a blob, actually. Type Shift-U a few times to get it to appear, or just pick any shape tool and then you'll see the blob in the Options Bar, so click on it there.

Make sure you draw the shape as a Path (choose the little icon in the Options Bar, a square with a pen nib inside of it). Draw the Shape. Go to Windows>Paths palette, and click the little icon at the bottom, convert Path to Selection. Then you copy/paste the photo layer, and only what's inside the shaped selection will be copied. (It also works as stated above, to draw the shape, then Ctrl-click to get a selection shaped like it, then delete the shape layer).

Or to crop it right on your layout, after making the selection, Select>Invert then Delete the photo layer. Deselect, Ctrl-D

have fun! let us know if this helps
