three questions from a pse newbie...

1. with text - if i want it to fit in a certain space, do i just have to type it that way and use my return? is there a way to make a text box and have the test wrap automatically?

2. i cut and pasted a texture from escrappers and used it. but, i had to cut and paste it several times to use in my space. now i have lines where the texture blocks come together. how do i smooth that out?

3. i enlarged my photo for use on my page. it looks great on the screen, of course, but how do i know the quality will be good when it's printed?

thanks!!!

1- Sorry there's no text box in PSE. Maybe if we all lobby Adobe they'll finally put it into the product. LOL So yes, just use returns when you want to go to a new line.

2- Well, there's several things that you can try. You could use the clone tool with a soft round brush to copy portions of the texture onto the seam. It could take some fussig with but I can usually get fairly seemless result. Also when you brought the texture in you could have just resized it to fit your LO. Alot of textures you don't even have to keep their aspect ratio the same when you resize them. But it's really whichever way YOU like.

3- Typically if your photo looks good at 100% in PSE it will fine when printed out. By good I mean... no pixelation or odd artifacts in the image. This is assuming that you're working at a high resolution (300 dpi).

HTH! And holler if you have more questions!

thanks

stacy,
thanks so much for your help!!!

one more question - i'm going to use whcc to print my stuff. they require a level 10 jpeg. that's no problem. but, besides saving as... to a jpeg, do i need to do anything to my document first? i.e. merge layers or anything like that?

When you save as a .jpg, it will automatically flatten the layers. Have fun!

when first starting out, it's a good idea to print a few layouts at home to see if your camera settings are high enough for good print results. Just for confidence before sending them out.

For textures, I'd resize them to fit my layout, but Im pretty sure escrapper's are large enough to fit a background. You can also download a filter from Simple Quick Tile to create your own seamless tiles. PS has a filter to do this, but I like Simple's better, and PSE doesn't have one at all.

It makes any image into a seamless tile. Images that are random, like rust pattern or other textures, make the best tiles.

I use this filter and show how to use the textures to make elements in my class, plug how to clean up patterns made from the filter. It's a great one, I like it better than the PS one that's included, so I use it in PSE and PS.

1) Yup that's the way you have to do it

2) Hmm. . . I've played with overlapping and erasing portions of textures- I did this once using strips of denim from a picture I took. In all honesty, it may have worked better if you had opened the texture file. Then gone to edit>Create/Define Pattern. You can then use this pattern to fill in the space you want. I hope that makes sense- if not, just say so, maybe someone else can fill in the blanks or I can type a better description at home with the software. (I do have some pattern tutorials on my website)

3) Probably yes. The key is usually to maintain 300 dpi (though some use 200 dpi). To do this I crop my pictures rather than resize them larger within my layout. You can set the crop setting for both size and 300 dpi. (You really want to use the dpi that matches what your layout is in). To crop, you have to do this outside of your layout in a different file then select, copy, and paste the image into your layout.

(I haven't use whcc yet so I can't help you there)
