Two totally unrelated questions!

I've just started using PSE3 and have a very basic question! After I've chosen a color from my picture, I would like to make lighter and darker variartions of that same color. I tried playing around witht the levels by choosing adjust saturaion/hue and adjust content of layer saturation /hue, but either the object turns clear or all of the layers get lighter. Somehow I managed to do it once on the plaid paper I made, but I can't figure out how to do it again!?!! Am I missing a step or is there and easier/better way to do it?

Also, I love the circle papers (like this one by Dana Zarling). http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/galle...hp?photo=51304 I was assuming that I should use a brush, but I don't see one with the tiny circles that make up the big circle. Do I need to import a brush form somehwere or am I way off base?

Sorry this is so long . . . I'm clueless! LOL!

TIA for any help!

Amy

Amy,

Are you wanting to adjust just the color that you're getting ready to paint with? If so once you've used the eyedropper to select a color from your photo, click on the foreground color in the toolbox. The Color Picker will pop up and you can adjust the Hue, Saturation, Brighteness or the amount of Red, Blue or Green in the color. Then paint or draw away with your new color. Sometimes I'll add a color as a stripe, shape or whatever to my LO and decide that it needs to be slightly changes to really look good. To do this I just Adjust Hue/saturation or CTRL+U and play with the sliders to change the existing color a little.

Yep, using a brush would be the easy way to creat those big dotted circles. And you're correct that it is NOT a default brush in PSE. I know there are some floating around for download. I just don't remember exactly where at the moment. You could also create you're one brush.

HTH! And if I misunderstood either question, please post and set me straight.

Thanks for the help, Stacy! You understood both questions! I actually want to be able to do both things with the colors (heck, I want to do EVERYTHING! ) I didn't realize that if you click on the circle with the "b" it meant brightness and you got a slider. LOL! Works great!

I couldn't get the second part to work. Nothing seems to happen when I have the layer selected and hit control U. (Could this be because I'm working with the trial version?) Where do I look for the adjust hue/saturation? Is it in the layers menu?

I'll see if I can find a brush to download. I think creating my own is WAY betond my skill level at the moment!!

Thanks, again!
Amy

I love those sliders in the color picker and I totally forgot to mention them. LOL I use the Brightness and Saturation ones alot.

Hmm... I'm not sure why the other tool wouldn't open up. You could try opening it through the menus Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation. I'm not sure what limitations the trial version may or may not have.

And if you want to do EVERYTHING.. you'll be creating your own brushes soon.

Good you found Rhonna's brush. I knew it existed but couldn't remember where to get it. LOL

Here's how to load brushes "on the fly". That means that you don't have to restart PSE to see the brushes but if you change the brush category you will no longer be able to use these brushes. The good news just reload them.
  1. Click on the Brush Tool in the toolbox.
  2. Click the down arrow next to the brush preview, to bring up a menu of available brushes.
  3. In the brush menu, click the right arrow.
  4. From the pop-up menu, click Load Brush…
  5. In the Load window, navigate to where the brush file (or ABR file) is saved. Select the ABR file and click Load.
  6. The newly loaded brushes will now be available at the bottom of the menu of available brushes.

If you'd like directions for permanently loading the brush I can give you those too. All this is coming out as a tut really soon.

I'm trying to figure out PSE 3, too. Stacy, a couple of questions for you -- What will be the scope of the tut? How soon will it be available?

And Amy, could you point me in the direction where did you find Rhonna's circle brush?

It is so great to have the terrific help available that we have in this forum. Thanks to all who so kindly help us out!

Hopefully the brush tut will be up later tonight or tomorrow. This tut will walk through the basics of loading brushes and how to use them. It should definitely get your feet wet with PSE and brushes.
