Scrapbook elements

I've been curious about something for quite some time now but was too embarrassed to ask. All these fabulous elements that digi-scrapper designers come up with i.e. buttons, ribbons and bows, hearts, even paper--are these completely created digitally in Photoshop or other graphics software? Or do they scan items or use a photo from which they extract the element? Some of these elements are so realistic that it's hard to imagine they were totally created digitally. Just my curiosity asking....

Most, I think are created totally digitally- ribbons are usually the item that's scanned.

It really depends on the designer. Many do completely digital and some do use scanned items. Good question!

Some of the elements are definitely scanned. Just look at this thread on knotted ribbons. I definitely think that there are designers out there with a enough artist ability to digitally render some of these elements. The time they would spend on creating the elements could be large due to almost drawing them "by hand" in their graphic software.

I can only speak for myself - bows/knots are reallly difficult to digitally draw so I scan them, everything else I do is digital. Great question!!

Another lace question

One more question--the forum you directed me to had a question that had not been answered yet. How do you extract a very lacey piece of ribbon with all those tiny holes and such? How do you clean it up enough for it to be used?

Not sure how the professional designers do it (lol), but I would scan it against a black or vibrant colored background so there would be lots of contrast (assuming, of course, the lace is white). Then I would use the magic wand tool to select the lace. You'd probably have to do a couple passes with the SHIFT key held down to get the shadowed areas. Then I would copy and paste to a file with a transparent background and save as a PNG. Hope that made sense!

(Hey, that might make a good tutorial for the ezine, no? BTW, starting in May the ezine will have specific PSE tutorials. Feel free to pm me or any DTM if there is anything particular you'd like to see.)
