Question Blurred Edges on Photos?

I'm trying to fade out the edge of a picture and it's not coming out like I imagine. I've been feathering the edge and it leaves the rectangular shape. I think what I'm wanting to do has to be done with a mask. I see it a lot in people's layouts so there must be a way. Am I making sense? Please help!

You're absolutely right. I would do it with a layer mask and a soft round brush which is not supported in PSE. It was the biggest reason I upgraded to CS. That said you could try using the eraser tool from the tool box and alter the opacity and flow as you erase the edges. An oval or circle feather might also do the trick

You CAN mimic masks in PSE without any add-ons or extra money. Check out this thread that I really need to make into a tutorial. This method takes a few steps but it works great!

Also you can get add-ons to PSE like Hidden Power of Elements (which costs money but comes with a great book) or use Grant's Tools (which are free).
