Problem with clone stamp

Sometimes the clone stamp just does not work. I use Alt and click to pick up a colour but it just doesn't deposit elsewhere. At other times it does. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but are you sure you're working in the layer you're trying to clone? I find myself creating an adjustment layer, then trying to clone on top of that and it takes a few clicks before I realize it's not doing anything.

My first thought was same as imaharpist--usually I am trying to clone on the wrong layer when this happens to me. Another thing I do by accident when trying to use this tool is I don't have align properly checked or unchecked. Whether you want it on or not depends on what you are doing. There is no way I can explain it properly, but if you do a quick experiment with a small image that you have then you can see the difference very easily.

Check the opacity of your brush also. I have had mine so low that the cloning hardly showed up before (on purpose, very lightly cloning...) and then I think it defaults back to the previous brush when you go back to the clone tool the next time. Hope you get it figured out.

I had problems with the clone stamp for a long time because I didn't understand the tool. You might be having the same issue. There are two options:

If 'Aligned' is NOT checked, then it will deposit the initial (sample) color every time you click.

However, if 'Aligned' is checked (default I think), then it doesn't just deposit your sample color every time you click on the page. This is the mode to eliminate a tear or electical line etc. It will deposit color based on your first two clicks to 'extend' the picture. I know I'm not explaining this well...but this caused me lots of confusion for a while.

Just try both options and you'll see what I mean.
Hope this is helpful.
