I use PS7, but I would imagine it's the same process. Type out your text in black, then choose Select, then Color Range and click on your letter (or just use the Magic Wand). This will select your text, then choose Inverse Selection, switch to your layer that you want to cut your letter out of, then hit the delete key. This should leave a cutout of your text.

I also just read about the Control + g method, but I haven't tried that out yet, so I'm not entirely sure how that one works.

HTH!!

I have PSE3, and I use Ctrl+G a lot. What it essentially does is this -- it maps whatever pattern or pixels on the top layer to whatever pixels are active on the bottom layer. So, for instance, if I have one layer where I have a circle, then add a layer of patterned paper above, I would push Control+G while the patterned paper is active. Wa - la! My circle is now made out of whatever patterned paper I used above. The same is true for text or anything else. It is really helpful.

In this case, write your text on one layer. Make a layer above it and add whatever color or pattern you want to show up in your text. Click Control + G and I think you'll like the results!

Another method would be to type the text. Then hit ctrl and click on the text layer in your layers pallette. Then got to Select>Inverse. And then click on your pattern background layer. Go to Edit>Cut

I JUST started playing with a trial verion of PSE 3 and so want to do this! I can't get the control G to work but I was able to do it with the method Amy suggested. Now I want to be able to save the file as a png and transport it to a different program, but when I do it still has a white background, How can I get rid of the background (It won't let me delete the background latyer in PSE) Thanks for you patience with someone who has absolutley no idea what she's doing!!
