This is a new feature of photpost (the software that the gallery runs in) and personally I don't think it's working.
I tried to sort one of my personal albums and nothing happened. I even tried giving all the LOs numbers to see if that helped. It didn't.
If you really want them sorted I would edit the titles like you mentioned. Sorry I didn't have a better, more useful answer for you.
