Hi Lea,

For Photoimpact the way you described is correct. If the element is not transparent then you'll get the white background as well. For the situation you described you can also just drag the element (object) onto the background. If you do this make sure you've made a duplicate of your element (control D), and close the original. Dragging the element is the equivalent of "moving" versus "copying."
