Photo Technique Challenge May 14-20

The technique challenge this week will be about portraits. This week I want you to try and take a photo capturing a portrait style photo. You'll want to consider what you learned in filling the lens, as you will want to balance the amount of background you include with your subject so as to keep your focus on the subject. To help with this, many cameras have a portrait mode that helps to blur the background and center to focus on your subject. Essentially, when you select the portrait mode on your camera, it automatically selects a large aperture (small number). If you have the ability to adjust your manual settings with your camera, you might want to play with aperture settings as well to see the differences. Another handy trick in getting a blurred background for your portrait is to make sure the subject is at least a couple feet away from the background (i.e. don't put your subject right up against a wall or sheet).

If you try a few different shots, maybe using automatic settings and then portrait mode, or varying your aperture, be sure to show us some of your before and after shots as well.

I can't wait to see everyone's photos! Have fun with this! Post your photos to the photo technique gallery by May 20, and then be sure to link us up here so we can all oooo and aaaaah over each other's photos.
