Mostly it appears to be animated gifs or images from photobucket. I noticed that I have an animated gif in a LO description (photobucket) that also shows as a blank retangle with the red X.
Some folks have images in their signatures that show up and some that don't. These screen shots are of my two blinkies in my sig.
Just checked a store advertisement- Grab Bag Revealed by shellyerae and those are all large wite squres with the X.
