My guess is that the following is happening..
When you open something - the window you are opening is filling the workspace and so when you open something else it is hidden behind
Create a blank document
Drag in or open anything.
Your screen probably looks like this
In the top right hand corner click on the restore down icon in the second row
Now your screen should like this and you can see both canvases in the Workspace - you may need to drag one over a bit to reveal the one underneath which you can do by clicking and dragging the blue image title bar
