Hi, yes you will need to extract the object you want from the background you don't want. Like Pesto said there are many ways to accomplish this and the exact steps would depend on what your photo looks like. Is it a simple object on a contrasting background or is it a complex object on a background with a lot of various colors? All those make a difference in which tools and methods you would use.
It could be as simple as using your magic wand tool and selecting the background colors and deleting them (you need to Promote your background layer to a raster layer for delete or cut to work correctly, you can do this by right clicking on your layers palette and picking that option)
You might find that the freehand selection tool and draw around your object to isolate it from the background part of the image.
You can use masks but that is a more advanced method, but once you get the hang of it, it really is the easiest way to extract an object.

Google is going to be your best friend also in learning how to use PSP but since the advent of Sony's Play Station Portable (PSP) you need to use the full words for Paint Shop Pro on searches and even the older PSP tutorials will work with the newer version since very little has changed except the look of the icons and where they are located within the dropdown menus!

Use the copy and paste as new layer as pesto mentioned to place the object into your new image.
To make your canvas large enough for two pictures side by side, you can use Image>Canvas Size and increase the size of your canvas so that both object will fit.
