for those interested.. I use the amazing Vertus fluid mask to do the same thing in about 30 seconds. You simply color in the areas you want to keep and you want to remove (the program creates blocks of areas and when you paint it fills in these blocks) and voila.. extraction! I use it almost exclusively these days... the pen tool is great but takes a lot of time - fluid mask saves you all the time and even does fine hair extraction with ease. Worth the $$ if you do a bunch of extractions....
