Gosh Brenda- I didn't have any problems with the Font Thing when I switched to Vista- never got an upgrade or patch etc. I only browse my downloaded fonts not my Windows font folder. Are you making sure to check view/open subfolders? Pretty sure you have ACDSee- they (Connie and Heidi at DigiScrapInfo) have some info on using ACDSee as a Font Manager but I haven't got that far yet

You can use ACDSee to view you fonts and also categorize them. Just haven't figured out the above info yet.
