THANK you for responding. I too have the Intuos 3 tablet. I have been able to adjust my brush settings right in the tablet, and also, PSE allows you to access brush settings from the toolbars. I cannot find a way to access them directly from within PSPX unless I am missing something! I tried your suggested settings, and like it (I saved it as Haley's brush) I think what I was doing wrong was having my hardness and my step way too high. This setting, even if I increase brush size or change opacity, gives me a thick to thin line according to pressure, and also seems a lot better when zooming in on it!
The part about correcting size for printing boggled me so I will save it for later. Right now I am drawing little figures, etc. and saving them as .png items. So I can adjust their size. I am not so concerned with writing.
